I choose to relate my midterm project to the idea of living in virtual reality that introduced to me while we learning of second life. The internet can serve as a way for others to create a new identity and even give it a detailed appearance such as an "avatar" which is ultimately an iconic alter-ego or split personality constructed in pixels and tacky digital renderings. I choose to keep within my own style of art making when creating my avatar.
I thought this was a fun way of incorporating the thoughts of second life without actually having to go on it and be apart of it. I think it would be fun if we all designed our own avatar. Another possible generative topic for this project could be just that: if you were to create a new identity for yourself, what would it be?
ReplyDeleteNice Mullet. This could be the new venue for street portraiture. You could just sit on the sidewalk and ask people what they want to look like, draw that and get paid! Easy money for you.
ReplyDeleteI like how your avatar has a lot of elements that were also in your other artwork. It really represents you and the art you make. But at the same time it is a little outrageous like a lot of the other avatars on second life.
ReplyDeleteYour 40oz. looks like a bottle of vinegar... Loved your simplicity of the assignment and would think it would be highly successful as an assignment in the classroom. Having students create, with traditional media, their own avatar/ different identity would be a good exercise. I also like how as an artist you've stuck with similar themes. Is this young man going to hop onto a freight train anytime soon?
ReplyDeleteI this avatar not wearing a shirt?
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic way in which to use the almost cliche web avatars which pop up everywhere to create pieces which make fun of the avatar but don't lose the creators unique style. I think this piece fits in perfectly with your other work!
i think that this is a very clever way to go about completing this project. As others have said, i think that this project would translate well in to a classroom assignment, especially with the upcoming generation being so enthralled with these digital worlds and online characters. I also really like your title and how it coincides with your character. I think it would be interesting to have the students create a similar story-title to go along with their avatar.
ReplyDeleteI really like this drawing, and I like that you're carrying a 40. I like your style of drawing, and it's cool to think about creating an alter-ego of ourselves since it's made so easy and possible for people to do on the internet now with sites like Second Life. It would be cool to see more of these! Awesome job! (:
ReplyDeletei like your drawing style. i like how vacant and aimless this guy looks.
ReplyDeletesecond life struck me as a selfish place. it was really easy to make up an alternate identity, but unfortunately people don't put much time into theirs, and most of them are sad examples of wish fulfillment. drawing an alternate identity is much more interesting, i think, and would make a good class assignment.
i want to know more about the person, how old is he? why does he have a 40? where does hate guide you?
Your idea is great but title of this is what really makes it to me. If you were to do portraits of people I have a feeling people would get offended by the titles you gave to them. And it would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteO.K. It is not clear if she is caught up and
ReplyDeletenever finds the planet of pizza ...I mean the
second life concept is only intimidating in so far as it might be the only life and nothing
real ever transpires.
